Recipe Tips

Almond Milk: We used almond milk in this recipe, but any milk is fine. You can really use any plant milk, soy milk, oat milk, cashew milk, or even dairy is fine if that’s what you choose.

Frozen Banana: Virtually every smoothie includes frozen banana. Bananas add an ultra creamy texture to any smoothie recipe. It makes any smoothie cold and creamy like a milkshake. It’s always a good idea to freeze any excess ripe bananas that you have on hand so you can be ready to make smoothies. Just peel the bananas and cut or break them into quarters and freeze them in freezer bags.

Kale: I use kale in almost every smoothie and smoothie bowl I make. While it isn’t essential, it is an easy way for me to get my 1 cup chopped kale every day in my diet. Kale is certainly not one of my favorite foods, but I eat it daily because it is one of the single best foods you can consume!

Protein Powder: I use vanilla, but chocolate protein powder is great too. Chocolate goes great with cherries! With protein powder, this smoothie provides about 35 grams of protein. Even more if you use dairy milk!

Honey: You’ll want to add couple of Tablespoons of honey to sweeten the smoothie, especially if you add kale. It helps to counteract the bitterness of the kale. You can also substitute date, or maple syrup.

Lime Juice: While lime juice isn’t essential, it adds a little tartness that works well with the cherries. I add it when I have it on hand.

Drink Smoothies when you make them: Smoothies and vegetable juices are best consumed immediately after making them. Fresh, healthy ingredients immediately begin to oxidize and the destruction of vital nutrients begins within minutes. While they can be refrigerated, it is advisable that they be consumed immediately.
